The Buddha belly plant, also called the bottle plant shrub or the gout plant, is characterized by its stem that rounds out at the bottom like a swollen belly. Its stem is woody and brown, except for the top where the leaves grow. The leaves are large, flat and five-lobed, sheltering a cluster of bright red flowers that grow from the center of the stem. Though the Buddha belly plant is generally tropical, it can be grown in milder temperate climates and is very easy to care for. Its charming shape and unusual foliage make it a good addition to any garden, indoors or out.
Plant Buddha bellies in large terra cotta pots in mildly temperate to seasonally cold areas. The pot can be kept outdoors during warm weather; bring it inside before the first frost.
Place your Buddha belly plant in a sunny area. They like full sun to very little shade, requiring at least five hours of sun per day.
