Simpson Stopper is a highly desirable native that is well integrated into mainstream landscape use. It's dark green boxwood like foliage lend it well to pruning, which has made it well know as a shrub or hedge, but in its natural small tree form is outstanding and is one of the finest small trees for landscaping. The stems or trunks of the plant display showy red peeling bark adding to its outstanding ornamental qualities. Its small size and manageability makes it fit well under most utility lines and smaller spaces in courtyards or side yards. Besides its ornamental appeal, it is well sought by wildlife gardeners as the fragrant white spidery flowers attract butterflies and the showy reddish orange fruit is both edible but highly sought out by songbirds.
Plant in partial shade to full sun. Keep Simpson Stopper well watered for an extended period to establish. After several feet of growth, Simpson Stopper will become drought tolerant but must be monitored to keep it from drying out in its first year or two.
