Jamaica Caper is a very ornamental and highly regarded Florida native plant. The form is upright and can be a large shrub or small tree. The very rich foliage is evergreen. The fragrant and exotic looking flowers are bore in May and June. The flowers are white to creme when they first open and turn a pale lavender as it ages. The flower is followed by 'bean pods' that split open to reveal brilliant vermilion coloring backing black small fruit that is readily consumed by songbirds.
Plant in sandy drained soil in partial sun to full sun. Jamaica Caper is adaptable to the mangrove system and is very salt and drought tolerant, but also tolerates unindation in salt water. Plant in coastal areas sheltered from frost.
