Dwarf chenille plant possesses the same fuzzy, tail-like, crimson red flowers of the standard chenille plant (Acalypha hispida) but on a low, herbaceous groundcover plant that seldom grows taller than 12". It will spread slowly to about 18-24" in diameter. The dainty, bright green leaves are ovate with serrated margins and contrast nicely with the blossoms.
Well suited for a hanging basket, dwarf chenille plant will cascade nicely over a wall if planted close to the edge on top of the wall. It can also be used in mixed beds and flower borders, as well as sunny rock gardens. The plant makes a good groundcover but tolerates foot traffic poorly, so is not well-suited as a lawn substitute.
The small stature and slow growth make it a nice addition to a rock garden or other small-scale landscape design.
Dwarf chenille plant needs a well-drained soil of moderate fertility. Water needs are moderate. It grows and flowers best in full sun. It will tolerate partial shade, but flowering will be greatly reduced and insect and disease problems are more likely to occur.
