'Pink Shasta' is a variety of Begonia coccinea, which itself is a "cane" type perennial begonia that forms a narrow, upright clump of reed-like stems with evenly spaced nodes. The handsome asymmetrical leaves are a lush, shiny bright green. Throughout the year but primarily in spring and summer, the plant will produce gorgeous, dangling flower clusters of small pink blooms that hang like jewels on a necklace. The plants can range from 3-6' in height but 4' is more likely in most South Florida landscape settings.
Begonias are shade plants, and will wither and scorch if given too much direct sun. Dappled to full shade is best, especially if the shade is from overhead trees. If selecting a site that receives direct sun, an eastern exposure (morning sun, afternoon shade) is best.
Begonias in general are picky about soil: it must be evenly moist but also extremely well drained and never soaking wet, or else the roots will rot. They are also heavy feeders and appreciate rich compost. A peat-based compost is ideal. They enjoy high humidity and warm temperatures for best performance.
