Dombeya wallichii is commonly called tropical hydrangea, but is not related to true hydrangea species. It is a fast growing large shrub or small tree that can get up to 25' high and wide, but 12-15' are more common in the landscape. In winter and early spring it produces large, pendant flower clusters up to 8" across. These are bright pink, lightly fragrant and look like florist hydrangeas from a distance, hence the common name "tropical hydrangea."
Give tropical hydrangea a well-drained soil in full sun. It tolerates light shade but flowers best in full sun. Trimming should be done after the flowers are gone in the spring. Old flowers remain on the plant for a long time; removing the dried flower heads is advisable for a neater appearance.
