Also called 'First Love,' 'Aimee' was originally bred for the cut flower industry as a heavy fragrance corsage. It produces the earliest and largest of all gardenia blooms: very large (4-6"), very double, rose-like blossoms with an elegantly spiraled form. The shrub is an upright grower to 4–6' tall and wide, well clothed in deep glossy green puckered leaves. 'Aimee' starts blooming in early spring and continues well into summer.
Select a location in full sun with good air circulation. Gardenias are heavy feeders so good soil preparation is recommended. Work in plenty of peat moss, compost and manure with the soil prior to planting. Gardenias also need consistent watering, especially during periods of drought, or else they will drop leaves and flowerbuds.
Gardenias are heavy feeders. Feed new plants lightly with a general garden fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks. Established planting need feedings in March, May, August and October. You can select from a 6-6-6, 10-10-10, 16-4-8, 20-20-20 or similar product. Just follow the label instructions. Feeding can also be performed with the new time released fertilizers following schedules and rates on the labels.
