A very pretty tropical plant great for shade and also does well in containers. Commonly called Malaysian grapes, it has textured deep green foliage with prominent veins, that may get up to 10" in length. The quilted leaves are characteristic of the Melastoma family of plants to which it belongs.
Malaysian grapes produces light pink bracts (flowers) that may pop up at any time of the year. The flowers grow in clusters that resemble a cluster of grapes, before blooming. The flowers eventually turn into pinkish purple berries that also resemble grapes, but are inedible. It can grow to be 6' tall and wide, but 3-4' is more common in cultivation.
Malaysian grapes demands excellent drainage, so give it a very porous planting mix; a blend of potting soil and orchid mix (bark, perlite, charcoal) works well. It prefers bright shade or partial shade; dense oppressive shade will inhibit flowering. It can tolerate moderate drought in between waterings.
