This tropical shrub produces large velvety leaves that are topped by spikes of royal purple flowers in summer. Grow it as a specimen or in the back of a mixed shrub border. It will grow anywhere from 4-6' tall and wide at maturity. The stems tend to lose their lower leaves over time, but the pale yellow-beige color of the stems is attractive enough to stand out well on its own.
Bigleaf princess flower will grow anywhere from filtered light to partial shade. Full sun will scorch the leaves, but full shade will inhibit flowering. Choose a soil with a good amount of organic matter and with good drainage. Add top soil (or organic peat moss) mixed with composted cow manure to the hole when you plant. Fertilize three times a year - spring, summer and autumn - with a good granular fertilizer. You might want to supplement feedings with liquid fertilizer and/or bonemeal to encourage more flowering. The use of a fertilizer for "acid loving plants" is recommended.
