Named for Patricia Bullis of Bullis Bromeliads, 'Patricia' is a bold hybrid developed in South Florida. It is great for the landscape because it takes a wide range of light conditions, from full sun to full shade. The leaves are 4"-5" wide and turn a beautiful purplish bronze when grown in sun; if grown in shade the leaves remain a medium shade of green with silvery undersides. The bloom is a huge, strong spike that is different shades of tangerine orange and coral pink; blooms often last for months at a time.
Aechmea is a large genus of mostly epiphytic bromeliads. The plants form broad rosettes of arching leaves with a central "tank" or reservoir for collecting water. Because of their sparse root system, bromeliads demand a well-drained soil. In heavy soil areas, till the planting area and incorporate compost and topsoil prior to planting. Care should be taken to ensure that the central "tank" always has some water in it through overhead irrigation or rainwater. Bromeliads in general dislike heavy fertilization.
