Alcantatea imperialis is a truly striking plant, forming a foliage rosette 4-5' across and 4' in height. When the bloom spike elongates, it can reach up to 7' tall. This "gentle giant" of the bromeliads is very distinguished in the landscape with its large, wide leaves that are mint green and silver on the upper sides, deep burgundy purple underneath.
Because of its heft and bold texture, Alcantarea imperialis is best used as a single specimen, in small groups of 3, or in pairs to bracket a formal entranceway.
Alcantarea imperialis does best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Give it a moist but very well-drained soil of moderate fertility. The plant's spineless leaves form a "tank" that acumulates water in the center and eventually becomes a miniature, self-contained ecosystem. To keep Alcantarea imperialis healthy and thriving, it is necessary to ensure that there is always water in the plant's "tank," so make sure that overhead irrigation will be present in the location chosen for this "king" of bromeliads.
