'Ivory Coast' is a cultivar of the common edible pineapple (Ananas comosus) that is sold in supermarkets around the world. The plants grow about 2' tall with a 3' spread and feature stiff, slender leaves that are handsomely variegated with pale green and creamy white vertical stripes. Toward the center of the rosette the leaves take on a warm pink tinge, creating a tricolor effect. The plant will eventually produce a bright pink flower stalk topped with an actual pineapple that is also pink! The fruit is edible but unpleasant-tasting, and should be considered strictly ornamental.
Unlike common pineapple, 'Ivory Coast' has spineless leaves, making it more user-friendly in the landscape. Plants look best in small groups or masses.
Pineapple plants grow best in moderately fertile, sandy loam soils of neutral to mildly acid pH. Plants will grow satisfactorily in sandy and calcareous soils with attention to watering and fertilizer. Pineapple should be grown in well-drained soils and areas of the landscape that do not flood. 'Ivory Coast' appreciates regular watering for best appearance.
Pineapple plants should be planted in full sun for best growth and fruit production, but tolerate partial shade.
