This origins of this hybrid variety are somewhat of a botanical mystery, but it is most likely a bigeneric hybrid between Aechmea and Androlepis. The correct botanical name is therefore xAndrolaechmea 'Paradise.' This is a rare and extremely beautiful bromeliad for the South Florida landscape. It can attain a wide range of colors: in full sun it will be bright cherry red, while in semi-shade it will be yellow-green with cherry red gradients on the upper portions of the leaves. Because of its beauty, tolerance of full sun and tolerance of drought, this is a very valuable landscape bromeliad. The 'Paradise' bloom is an incredible flower spike of small, densely packed pink-tipped white flowers. The plant will achieve some hefty size in the landscape, generally 3'x3'.
Give 'Paradise' the same growing conditions as the aechmeas: well-drained soil of moderate fertility. It is drought tolerant but will look more lush with regular watering. Full sun or partial shade are equally acceptable and will change the foliage color as sited (see above).
