Billbergias are bromeliads that tend to grow with very narrow and upright, vase-shaped rosettes of foliage that gracefully curl at their tips. The entire picture is one of extreme elegance. Billbergia rosea is a species that features greenish-burgundy foliage with silvery white spots and stripes. The flower is an elegant, arching stalk with soft pink bracts surrounding small white blossoms. The blooms are not as long-lasting as other bromeliads (the aechmeas, for example) but nevertheless still puts on a lovely show.
Billbergia will tolerate a wider range of temperature than many other bromeliads. This makes them an ideal choice for outdoor landscapes in climates that don’t regularly experience hard frosts. Billbergia can withstand temperatures down to 26 degrees for short periods of time. The plant will tolerate even colder temperatures, but may sustain some damage.
Billbergia thrives when there is plenty of humid air circulation around them, making them good landscape subjects for South Florida. They do not require much water, but they do like water kept in their central tank.
