Unlike its cousin Hohenbergia castellanosii, Hohenbergia stellata is grown for its extremely showy and striking flower. The plant forms a typical bromeliad rosette of strap-shaped, medium green leaves with purple to red tips, growing up to 30" in length and spread. The inflorescence of this species is striking and extends out beyond the leaves, reaching 3' or more in height. Compact clusters of flowers develop at the tip of this inflorescence. Each cluster contains distinctive red floral bracts within which the vivid purple flowers can be seen. The flower is extremely long-lasting in the landscape.
Hohenbergia stellata prefers partial shade, well-drained soil of average fertility, and regular watering to ensure the central tank is always moist.
