Portea 'Jungles' has a very informal "wildflower" look to it that lends itself best to massing in the landscape. This is a fairly large bromeliad that will get 3-4' tall and slightly less in width, owing to the leaves that tend to grow more upwards rather than outwards. The leaves are an exquisite, unusual shade of soft reddish brown or chocolatey maroon, shaded with green. The extremely handsome flower spike stands high above the vase-shaped foliage and features a coral-pink stem with dense, feathery, pink and red buds that eventually open to violet flowers. The flowers are very long lasting.
Portea species are terrestrial bromeliads that grow in full sun in the coastal regions of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In the South Florida landscape, give them full sun and a well-drained, not-too-rich soil.
