'Jungles' is variety of the bromeliad species Portea petropolitana var. extensa, endemic to coastal Brazil. It may reach a height of about 3' prior to flowering. The light yellow-green leaves form a stiff but informal, upright rosette. The beautiful flower grows 12 to 18 inches long above the foliage, and features a coral red flower stalk with dozens of tiny lavender and apple green florets that will turn into equally handsome, dark purple berries.
Portea species are terrestrial bromeliads that grow in full sun in the coastal regions of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In the South Florida landscape, give them full sun and a well-drained, not-too-rich soil.
