A bizarre deciduous tree from sub-Saharan Africa, whose claim to fame lies in the massivlye swollen trunk on mature specimens. The smooth gray bark is sporadically wrinkled with “elephant hide” looking ripples that add to its unique appearance. Massive, pendulous white flowers appear in winter after the leaves fall.
The baobab's extremely swollen trunk holds water and naturally renders the tree extremely drought tolerant. Newly planted specimens need regular watering the first few months, but established trees will weather South Florida's alternating wet and dry seasons with no supplemental irrigation whatsoever. It demands a well-drained soil in full sun. Rich soil will help it grow a little faster than its normally slow growth rare.
Baobab's main liability is its size: Mature specimens are large and should be placed in an open area where the outstanding trunk feature can be admired.
