A gorgeous and much-underused winter-flowering tree for South Florida, blooming for a long time from December through February/March. Large, red, lily-like flowers up to 6” across stud the bare branches, which are silvery gray and lovely in the landscape. The foliage and thorny stems are similar to pink silk floss tree, to which it is closely related. The branches are whorled along the main trunk like spokes, creating an outstanding architectural silhouette. Red silk cotton tree works as a specimen tree or in small groups to create a grove.
Plant the red silk cotton tree in an open, sunny area with well-drained soil. It is tolerant of South Florida's alternating wet/dry seasons and established trees are drought tolerant, although they look better with supplemental irrigation in extremely dry weather.
