Most bougainvilleas are thorny, scandent (climbing) shrubs, but Bougainvillea arborea is the a true tree-form member of the genus. It is extremely under-utilized in the South Florida landscape, but should be more widely grown because it has many selling points. It is fast growing, thornless, and blooms off and on all year rather than just in the cooler months like some of the Bougainvillea species. It is also more tolerant to wet soils than most of the other varieties. The flowers are a light violet purple, and mature stems and branches have textured gray-brown bark. From a distance it gives the effect of a purple crape myrtle, except that tree bougainvillea is evergreen and will not defoliate in winter. Mature plants will top out at around 15-20' tall and about the same spread.
Tree bougainvillea is also extremely low maintenance: just plant it in a sunny spot, in an area that isnt swampy -- it can adapt to both dry and moist soils otherwise. It has very low fertilizer and irrigation needs, making it both low-maintenance and eco-friendly for the landscape. Like other bougainvilleas, it has very few pest and disease problems. Tree bougainvillea works as a stand-alone specimen, in small groups of 3-5, or use a matched pair to bracket a sunny entranceway or courtyard.
