Many of the large, red-flowering trees in South Florida bloom during the winter, but Australian flame tree blooms reliably in the spring, typically from April to June. A mature specimen in full bloom is a stunning mass of scarlet bell-shaped flowers up and down all the branches. The leathery green leaves are big and maple-like, and the tree itself forms a strongly upright, oval-shaped canopy that casts good shade. In South Florida, the tree will mature at around 40-50' in height with a spread of 20-30'.
Australian flame tree grows best in a sunny spot, with well-drained fertile soil and protection from strong winds, if possible. It prefers to go dry (no supplemental irrigation) during the winter, and in fact flowers best after an extremely dry winter in South Florida.
