Ylang-ylang (pronounced "elang elang") is an unusual tropical tree from Southeast Asia, whose claim to fame is the extremely strong, sweet fragrance of its flowers. The dull greenish-yellow flowers are not showy, but they emit an intoxicatingly strong, rich fragrance They are used to make Chanel No. 5, the world’s most popular perfume, as well as countless other aromatherapy products. The delicously scented flowers bloom nonstop throughout the year, adding to the plant's appeal. The ylang-ylang tree has an interesting, upright, somewhat narrow habit of growth and looks almost like a Christmas tree from a distance. Branches tend to droop and hang down vertically from the central trunk.
Ylang-ylang does best in rich, well-drained soil and full sun. Like many tropical trees, it will tolerate partial shade but flowering will be reduced in these conditions. It is fast-growing and low-maintenance once established.
Because of the delicious perfume, ylang-ylang is best used when sited near a patio, walkway, or anyplace else where visitors will experience the fragrance close at hand.
