One of the largest and most beautiful of the cassias, appleblossom cassia makes an unrivaled floral display when in bloom. The flowers, which emerge in March and April, start out dark rosy pink in the bud stage, fading to a blush pink in the fully opened flowers. A mature tree will be a fluffy bicolored pink and white cloud for 2 months or longer in the spring. The overall effect is similar to the blossoms on apple trees (genus Malus), hence the common name. The delicate, ferny, bright blue-green foliage is handsome in its own right. The growth habit is broadly umbrella shaped and spreading, similar to poinciana; typical dimensions are 30' tall and 40' wide.
Cassias in general are unfussy trees: give them a spot in full sun, a well-drained soil, and water new transplants until they are established. Mature trees tolerate seasonal drought quite well.
