A fascinating South American tree with a bulbous green trunk covered in fat, blunt, triangular spines. The thorns and bark turn gray with age. The entire tree becomes a thing of great beauty at the start of the dry season, typically late October in South Florida, when it is covered in large, hibiscus-like flowers for up to two months. The lovely flowers are pink with multicolored white, yellow and dark brown centers, exquisite both up close and from afar. Silk floss tree is briefly deciduous before its flowering period.
Plant silk floss tree in a sunny open area where the floral display and attractive thorny branches can be appreciated from all sides. It prefers well-drained soil kept on the dry side. Because of its highly sculptural appearance, it works very well as a specimen tree or as a focal point in a landscape bed. The swollen trunk stores water and renders the tree extremely drought-tolerant, adding to its overall low-maintenance appeal.
