A deservedly popular, massive flowering tree with innumerous selling points. The beautiful lacy blue-green foliage is handsome on its own and would make the tree worthwhile even if it never flowered. But it does indeed flower, blanketing itself in large clusters of fiery vermilion blossoms that cover the tree all summer long, beginning at the start of the rainy season in May or June. Flowering may last as late as December if the tree is kept well-watered. The handsome, smooth grey bark is also a standout. Mature specimens often have buttressed roots. The tree forms a high-canopied, flat-topped silhouette wider than it is tall, perfectly suited as a shade tree for lawns, since grass will not be shaded out underneath. Royal poinciana generally matures around 35' tall and 45-50' wide, and may lose some leaves during the dry season.
Royal poinciana is very fast growing, about 5' per year until maturity, and tolerant of a wide range of well drained soils from acidic to alkaline and from loamy to gravelly. It's best to provide protection from strong winds. Give it full sun; any degree of shade will limit flowering.Royal poinciana is drought tolerant, but does best with regular water in the growing season and very little water in its dormant season.
