An exquisite tree for landscape use in South Florida. Native to the South Pacific, rainbow eucalyptus is named for the exfoliating bark of the trunk and branches, which peels off in glorious striped shades of dark green, lime green, orange, red, purple and brown. The tree forms an upright, oval canopy of fairly open branches that make it suitable as a shade tree for lawns. Excellent for use as a specimen tree or as an alleé of trees along a walk or driveway. In South Florida the tree will mature at about 50' tall and 30-35' wide.
Unlike most other Eucalyptus species, rainbow eucalyptus is not native to dry regions of Australia. Rainbow eucalyptus is a rainforest species from Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, and as such prefers tropical climates with constant heat, high humidity, and lots of rainfall. This makes it a perfect landscape subject for South Florida.
Because it prefers lots of water, the ideal location for rainbow eucalyptus is near
freshwater ponds, lakes, or canals. Mature trees can survive and grow in drier areas, but they become their most luxuriant when they have access to abundant moisture. Full sun is best for this species.
