The African Sausage tree is a semi-deciduous (mostly evergreen) tree found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It is named for its unique fruits, which resemble two-foot long wooden sausages. These form from the equally unique flowers, which are large and bell-shaped and can vary in color from orange to dark red to purplish green. The flowers hang in large clusters on long flexible stems 5-10' long. They are nocturnal and pollinated by small bats. The flower clusters wave gracefully about in the wind on windy nights, adding to the tree's charm. ndividual flowers do not hang down but are oriented horizontally. The tree itself forms a rounded canopy up to 40' tall and wide, and grows fairly rapidly once established.
Planting sites for the African sausage tree should be selected carefully; avoid using this tree in areas where cars are parked, as the falling fruit can dent vehicles. Other than that, the tree is relatively easy to grow, only needing a sunny location and well-drained soil for optimal growth. Mature trees are drought-tolerant.
