Although they are separate species, the variegated screw pine is similar to the regular (non-variegated) screw pine in its easy culture: It tolerates full sun, coastal conditions, soggy soils, even dry spells when mature. The plant definitely responds to frequent watering, however, and in moist soils near water, growth will be rapid. It has the same strap-like leaves, whorled like a screw, as the plain green variety, but without sharp spines along the margins- a definite plus. The leaves are also longer than P. utilis. As with the regular screw pine, it too will produce numerous "trunks" supported by a profusion of stilt roots. Mature plants will be 30' by 30' or wider.
Grow variegated screw pine in full sun to partial shade. It does best in a humid environment, making it very suitable for landscape use in South Florida, but it is drought tolerant once established. It grows well in any soil, but grows faster and more lush if given plenty of water during the summer -- not a problem given South Florida's typical wet rainy summers and dry winters.
