The purple glory tree is one of the best flowering trees in South Florida, blooming for most of the year. This Brazilian native does not get very big in Florida, growing more like a large shrub and reaching an average of 15' tall with a spread of about 10'. Large, royal purple blossoms, flaring open to 2-3" wide, are held on terminal panicles above the foliage, creating a spectacular sight when in full bloom. Some flowers are open throughout the year but they are especially plentiful from May to January.
Purple glory tree will grow in full to partial sun, needs average water, and freezing temperatures should be avoided. This particular Tibouchina needs good drainage acidic soil in order to prosper. The use of a fertilizer for acid loving plants is recommended. This Tibouchina blooms on the new growth, therefore trimming the plant right after flowering will encourage more new growth and consequently more flowers.
