Every South Florida garden deserves a pineapple plant, for this bromeliad is as lovely as it is useful. Forming a rosette of long, stiff leaves 3' feet tall and 3-4' wide, it is equally good in the ground or in containers. The leaves are a deep blue-green and very symmetrical. From the center of the plant arise the flowers, with up to 200 light-purple to deep-red blooms held in a tall whorl. Eventually the flowers set berries, which join together to produce the pineapple fruit.
The fruit of this pineapple is white-fleshed, with no woodiness in the central core. It has a very high sugars-to-acids ratio, making it super-sweet and delicious. The fruit will generally ripen sometime between May and September.
Pineapple plants grow best in moderately fertile, sandy loam soils of neutral to mildly acid pH. Plants will grow satisfactorily in sandy and calcareous soils with attention to watering and fertilizer. Pineapple should be grown in well-drained soils and areas of the landscape that do not flood. 'Elite Gold' needs regular watering for best fruit production.
Pineapple plants should be planted in full sun for best growth and fruit production, but tolerate partial shade.
