Rollinia is a fast-growing tropical tree that can reach up to 50' in the wild but is generally 20-30' tall in the landscape, with a similar spread. The fruit is large, conical or round, green when unripe, ripening to yellow. Its surface is covered with soft spines or protuberances which bruise and blacken with handling, giving it an unappealing appearance but not affecting the taste at all. The fruit is very soft and sweet, tasting somewhat like a lemon meringue pie, hence one of the tree's common names. Some reports of the flavor are extremely favorable, others more moderate. It is generally eaten out of hand, though some chefs have used it for cooking, and wine has been made out of it in some South American countries. The fruits generally ripen in late summer to fall.
This strictly tropical tree needs warm, most soils in hot, humid climates. It is the most water-demanding of the Annona trees, needing regular year-round irrigation in areas like South Florida that have a yearly dry season. Plant rollinia in an open area in full sun for best fruit production.
Rollinia grows best in deep, rich, organic soil and benefits form copious amounts of mulch as long as there is good drainage, but it tolerates poorer and highly acidic soils as long as there is sufficient water. It is one of the most flood-tolerant of the annona fruit trees.
