Tea, a variety of camellia shrub, is one of the most economically important plants of the world. The young leaves are processed and brewed into what has become the 2nd most popular beverage in the entire world after plain water. Tea has been used for in China for over than 2500 years for its medicinal properties. These properties are now largely studied by scientists, and research shows that substances in tea can be used against epilepsy, emotional disturbances, and cancer.
The evergreen shrub grows up to 10' tall but is generally 5-6' in the landscape, with dark green, stiff, shiny leaves with serrated edges. The young leaves are a tender light green. The white flowers, accented by golden stamens, are much smaller than other camellias, but still put on a handsome show in fall and winter.
Tea can be grown in full sun but actually prefers partial shade, especially dappled shade from overhead trees. It requires a moist, well drained, very acidic soil to grow well. In South Florida, the planting bed should be deeply amended with rich organic compost and an acid fertilizer should be applied 2-3 times a year around established plants. Tea makes a handsome low hedge or foundation plant.
