This is one fruit tree that should be seen more often! It is a lovely evergreen ornamental with its shiny dark green leaves and striking white flowers in mid-March. The white
flowers have about 100 white stamens with yellowish anthers. The new growth is an attractive rosy-burgundy red. The fruit tastes like a Bing cherry, and is the closest substitute for true cherries in tropical South Florida. These trees can grow 25-30' tall, but can be kept pruned shorter if necessary. The trees will re-flower so that you will have fruit several times during the year, although the first crop is the largest. The first crops generally ripen in April and May.
As with most of the edible eugenias, this tree may be successfully grown in almost any soil type, provided it is well-drained. It requires a good moisture supply at all times, and does best in slightly acid soils which are low in salts. Full sun is best; it will tolerate partial shade but flowering and fruiting will be reduced.
