Pitomba is perhaps the most beautiful of the edible eugenias. It is an attractive, slow-growing tree, 12-15' tall in the landscape, with dense foliage and a symmetrical oval crown. The evergreen leaves are deep dark green with a paler underside; new growth is temporarily coated with bronze hairs. The beautiful flowers are pure white with yellow stamens. These mature into equally beautiful fruits that resemble apricots in color and taste. Each fruit is 1-2" in diameter and a stunning, glowing apricot-yellow in color. Fruits are eaten fresh and also make excellent jelly and preserves. In South Florida the flowers generally bloom in May to June; fruit crops mature around July/August.
For best growth and fruiting, give pitomba transplants a rich, well-drained soil and a full sun exposure, and provide regular irrigation during dry spells. As with all eugenias, it needs an acidic (non-alkaline) soil for best performance, so in South Florida it is best to provide an acid fertilizer several times a year.
