Native to the Himalayas, goji is a quick-growing vining shrub that may take a season to establish in the landscape. Once it makes itself at home, expect it to put on 4' or more of growth per year. The shrub is very lax and informal looking, with long, sparsely thorny, arched or climbing branches that will form a tangled clump similar to raspberry and blackberry. The white to lavender flowers appear in early summer and are soon replaced by masses and masses of red berries. Goji berry has been called a superfruit because it so rich in health benefits. Nearly 13% protein, it is also very high in vitamin C, and is a powerful antioxidant. Eaten fresh from the vine or dried and then cooked, it has a pleasant, tomato-influenced tart flavor and herbal scent. The berries themselves are oblong (rather like olives) and turning orange-red when ripe; they remain on the plant from midsummer all the way to frost. The berries have a mild tart flavor whose taste is variously described as a mix of cherry, licorice, and cranberry.
Goji berry is relatively easy to grow, requiring only full sun, a well-drained soil, and supplemental irrigation in extremely dry weather. Because of its vigorous nature, you may want to prune it down with an annual late-winter "haircut." Or, if you prefer, shape it into a small single-stemmed tree. It flowers and fruits generously in any form, but does much better with an annual pruning. Because of goji's extensive root system and spreading nature, it can be used for erosion control and soil stabilization.
This plant is rather spiny, which discourages nibbling pests from eating the fruit. It should also discourage from touching the green berries, which may blacken if they are handled. Green berries are mildly poisonous and only the ripened red berries should be harvested and eaten.
