The mammee apple tree is handsome and greatly resembles southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) with its large, impressive oval outline and bold foliage. The tree reaches 60-70' tall in the wild but will be closer to 40' in the landscape. It has attractive ascending branches forming an erect, oval head, densely foliaged with evergreen, glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. The fragrant 1" diameter flowers are pure white with bright golden orange stamens.
The fruit, nearly round or somewhat irregular, is typically the size of a softball. The skin is light-brown or grayish-brown with small, scattered, The ripe flesh is appetizingly fragrant and has the taste of apricot but the texture of ripe cantaloupe. They are best eaten fresh or used in smoothies and milkshakes. In South Florida, mammee apple generally ripens between late June and mid August.
The mammee apple favors deep, rich, well-drained soil, but is apparently quite adaptable to even shallow, sandy terrain. It grows naturally in limestone areas of Jamaica, also does well in the oolitic limestone of the Bahamas and South Florida. Give it full sun for best fruit production. Mammee apple is remarkably resistant to pests and diseases, making it a good choice for low-maintenance landscapes and gardens.
