Mangos are the oldest cultivated fruit tree in the world. First cultivated in India 4,000 years ago, there are now at least 500 (some say 1000) different varieties of the plant, ranging from early to late season and dwarf to standard (height). The tree itself is impressive, with bold tropical foliage that is a handsome bronze when emerging. The delicious and versatile fruit ranges in color from green to yellow, pink, orange and red, with or without black specks, and is generally kidney-shaped.
'Julie' is a popular variety due to its very dwarf habit -- mature trees are seldom taller than 10'. The fruit is sweet and tangy with a rich pineapple-like flavor and handsome red, orange and yellow coloration. Unfortunately 'Julie' is susceptible to fungal infections that are spread in humid weather, making fungicide applications necessary for success if growth in humid South Florida. Fruits ripen in late June and July.
This tasty and nutritious fruit is deservedly popular in South Florida due to its adaptability and diverse range of varieties. It will grow in poor soils and does not need a lot of water, although growth and fruit harvests will both improve with good soil and regular watering. Good production starts in 2-3 years with grafted trees, although grafted trees will flower and fruit the first year even when small.
