Mangos are the oldest cultivated fruit tree in the world. First cultivated in India 4,000 years ago, there are now at least 500 (some say 1000) different varieties of the plant, ranging from early to late season and dwarf to standard (height). The tree itself is impressive, with bold tropical foliage that is a handsome bronze when emerging. The delicious and versatile fruit ranges in color from green to yellow, pink, orange and red, with or without black specks, and is generally kidney-shaped.
'Nam Doc Mai' is a premium cultivar introduced from Thailand to Florida in the 1970s. The fruit is firm, sweet, aromatic and totally fiberless. The tree is a dwarf variety maturing at around 12' tall. It does extremely well in humid climates such as South Florida's.
This tasty and nutritious fruit is deservedly popular in South Florida due to its adaptability and diverse range of varieties. It will grow in poor soils and does not need a lot of water, although growth and fruit harvests will both improve with good soil and regular watering. Good production starts in 2-3 years with grafted trees, although grafted trees will flower and fruit the first year even when small.
