Noni is an unusual and attractive member of the Rubiaceae (madder family), which also includes edibles such as coffee. The plant forms an upright mounded shrub of very large, glossy, puckered and textured leaves with a cascading habit. It will reach heights of 10-15' with a similar spread. Noni can be pruned into a single stem to form a small, bold-textured tree.
The plant blooms throughout the year, but most frequently in hot humid weather. The small trumpet-shaped white flowers bloom atop an unusual green structure that looks like a cross between a raspberry and a pine cone. After the flowers fade, this structure enlarges and ripens into the noni fruit, fading to a pale greenish white. The juice of noni fruit is said to be extremely good for you and can boost functions of the immune system, circulatory system, digestive system, as well as increasing energy and stamina, mental clarity and focus, and has chemical components that are beneficial to hair and skin.
Morinda citrifolia grows in shady tropical forests as well as open rocky or sandy shores, making it amenable to both full sun and partial shade conditions. It is tolerant of saline soil and drought conditions but not permanently wet or saturated soils. Fertilize it regularly during the growing season for best flowering and fruiting. Because of its large textured leaves, noni would be an especially dramatic focal point in the garden or landscape.
