Native to the southern foothills of the Himalaya Mountains, horseradish tree was so-named because the roots have a taste similar to horseradish and can be used as a substitute. Many parts of the plant are edible, including the roots, leaves, flowers, immature seed pods, and mature seeds. The leaves are the most nutritious part of the plant, being a significant source of vitamins, minerals and protein.
The plant is a fast growing, briefly deciduous small tree or large shrub that will reach a size of abut 15' x 8' in the average landscape. The pale gray bark is surrounded by thick cork. Young shoots have purplish or greenish-white, hairy bark. The tree has an open crown of drooping, fragile branches and the leaves build up a feathery foliage of tripinnate leaves. The small white flowers are fragrant and bloom in large upright to drooping clusters. Flowering generally occurs once a year between April and June. The fruit is a pendant brown capsule that holds dark brown, globular seeds.
The moringa tree is grown mainly in semiarid, tropical, and subtropical areas. It does well in South Florida but may shed its leaves in cold or freezing weather. It grows best in dry sandy soil and tolerates poor soil, including coastal areas. Moringa loves full sun and intense heat and, because of its tolerance of drought and dry soils, is an excellent choice for xeriscape gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.
