Most mulberries are temperate climate fruits that do not do well in the tropics, but 'Dwarf Everbearing' has a very low chill requirement and is therefore suitable to cultivation in South Florida. The plant forms a large shrub or small tree 6-15' high and wide, depending on how often it is pruned. The dark green leaves have a pleasant quilted texture. The fruits are similar in size and shape to common blackberries and gradually change color from pale red to deep red to dark purplish-black as they enlarge and mature. Mature fruits have a sweet flavor and can be used for jam, jelly, wine, and baked desserts.
Black mulberry does best in fertile, well-drained soils and full sun for best fruiting. Birds love the fruit, so it may be necessary to use netting to protect ripening crops. Because the fruits are messy and stain surfaces, the plant is best sited away from walkways and patios.
