Passiflora edulis, commonly called purple passionfruit, is an evergreen vine that typically grows 15-20' in spread. The entire vine is graceful and beautiful: the leaves are large, glossy and lobed, and the plant produces extremely showy, large, fragrant purple and white flowers that mature into edible, 2" oval fruits that start out green and change to deep purple as they ripen. Passionfruit is native to Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, but is now grown in tropical and subtropical climates throughout the world. The fruit has a fresh, sweet flavor and is the source of the distinctive taste of "Hawaiian Punch." Ripe fruits are edible off the vine or incorporated into a variety of food products such as beverages, jellies, fruit salads and sherbets.
Individual flowers are a conversation piece. Each flower has 5 greenish-white sepals, 5 white petals and a decorative corona of white filaments which are showy purple at the bases. In Florida, the purple-white flowers begin blooming in early spring and continue into summer. The name "passion flower" dates back to the 1700s, when early Spanish settlers interpreted various parts of the flower to be symbolic of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Passion fruit is adaptable, but grows and fruits best in moist, fertile, well-drained, sandy loams and full sun. Tolerates light shade, flowering is reduced under these conditions. This vine appreciates high humidity. It also requires good air circulation to discourage fungal diseases. Water evenly and consistently during the growing season. Vines produce flowers on new growth, so they may be pruned as needed early in the growing season.
Because passion fruit vines cling using tendrils, they need a slender support such as wire fencing, lattice or wood framework 2" or less in diameter. They will not cling by themselves to walls or other flat surfaces.
