Sweet calabash is a slender tropical vine native to the Carribean and Central America, but now widely cultivated in the West Indies and South Florida. The leaves are simple and unlobed, unlike many other passionfruit vines. The pendant flowers are fragrant, 3" in diameter, with purple, red and white speckled petals. The very exotic, fragrant blooms appear from June to November. Thethree floral bracts surrounding each bloom are large, nearly enclosing the flower.
The flowers are followed by delicious, sweet, juicy, aromatic yellowish green fruits that have a succulent grape-like flavor. The rind is particularly hard, and tougher than most other passionfruit. Fruits generally ripen from September to December in South Florida.
Sweet calabash requires a bit more maintenance than other passionfruit. Pruning is a must to keep the vine healthy. Prune off less vigorous growth and occasionally prune back vigorous growth to promote flowering. When established, and without care, sweet calabash can easily overtake other garden plants, so give it room to spread on a large trellis, arbor or pergola. It does best in well drained, rich soils in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade.
