Black pepper is an evergreen, woody climber from India and Sri Lanka. It has glossy, dark green, heart shaped leaves with a very attractive quilted texture. From June through August the vine will produce dangling spikes of small, white flowers. These mature into round fruit which turn red when ripe.
When the ripe pepper corns are harvested, they are dried, which causes them to wrinkle and turn black. White pepper is the same as black pepper, but simply has the skin removed.
Black pepper likes a well drained, fertile soil. The plant will tolerate every exposure from full sun to deep shade, but the best growth and deep green leaf color occurs in partial shade. It is not frost-tolerant.
The vines are aggressive and the plant will need strong supports to take its weight, so a sturdy arbor, pergola or other structure is essential when growing this vine.
