Native to Brazil, the Cattley guava, also called strawberry guava, is an extremely ornamental tree whose small size lends itself well to a variety of landscape situations, including backyard gardens, larger landscapes, and both specimen and group plantings alike. A fairly slow-growing plant, it will mature at around 12 to 15' in height with a slightly smaller spread. It is generally multistemmed like a crape myrtle, with slender, smooth trunks and branches that have a handsome and elegant zigzag habit of growth. The bark exfoliates and peels in beautiful shades of cinnamon brown and pale tan. The evergreen, glossy leaves are lovely and fresh to look at. Small fragrant white flowers are sprinkled over the tree like a dusting of snowflakes. These mature into rounded, 1-2" diameter fruits with a handsome dark-red or purple-red skin. The flesh is white to pale pink in color, sweet and juicy with a flavor described as a cross between passionfruit and strawberries, hence the common name. In South Florida the trees bear fruit twice a year, once in spring/summer and again in fall/winter.
The cattley guava does well in limestone and poor soils that would barely support other fruit trees. It luxuriates on better soil, however, and best fruit crops come from giving the tree rich, moist but well-drained soil. It is shallow-rooted but fairly drought tolerant. Full sun is best.
