The yellow mombin is erect and stately, growing up to 65' tall in the wild, although 30' is more likely in home landscapes. The trunk is somewhat buttressed, with thick, fissured bark. The ferny leaves often have pinkish, fuzzy petioles. Small, fragrant, off-white flowers bloom in January and February. The golden-yellow fruit, the size and shape of an egg, hangs down in numerous branched clusters of a dozen or more. The skin is thin but tough skin. The very juicy pulp has the taste of a slightly acidic, "citrusy" plum. These ripen in August and September in South Florida.
The tree is fast-growing in full sun and rich, moist soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, although best fruit production occurs with regular irrigation. Because of its size and dense canopy, it would be best used as a shade tree or specimen within a large area of lawn.
