This small evergreen shrub grows very slowly to a height of 4-6' in a container, perhaps a bit larger in a landscape or garden. Eventual size depends on where the plant is grown; a 10 years old plant might be easily only 4-5 feet tall. It forms an oval to pyramidal shaped shrub much narrower than it is tall.
Inconspicuous brown-and-white 1/2 inch flowers are followed by bright scarlet, 1 inch footbal-shaped fruit, sweet and pleasant tasting. Most of the fruit is taken up by a single large seed, but the pulp around it can be nibbled off. Its claim to fame is an unusual glyco-protein inside the fruit that causes human taste buds to become unable to detect sour taste for up to two hours -- thus, sour things like lemons and grapefruit will taste like sweet candy! Miracle fruit is a novelty used to enhance the flavor of sour foods in this manner. The fruit also acts as an appetite stimulant for chemotherapy patients, making it a valuable gift for anyone undergoing chemotherapy.
Miracle fruit produces fruit practically year around. In its native habitat, two large crops are available yearly, each after a rainy season. The mature bushes usually have a few fruits hanging around all year. Flower to fruit in 30 to 45 days.
Needs acidic soil and is intolerant to alkaline conditions. Growing in half soil-half peat works well and plants will benefit considerably from occasional applications of acidic fertilizer. Will tolerate minimal frost when full grown, but plants need lots of water year round. The miracle fruit cannot be grown outside in the United States except South Florida, but it makes an easy houseplant. Fruit is produced throughout the year and hundreds of berries can be harvested from a single plant. The miracle fruit grows and fruits well in containers. Whether in the ground or in containers, it needs partial shade for best performance
