Malay apple forms a large, sturdy tree 30-40' or more in height with a similar or slightly smaller spread. The handsome tropical leaves have reddish petioles and are glossy dark green above, lighter green below. The flowers are spectacular and make a beautiful show on older, woody branches and occasionally even on the trunk itself; individual flowers have four small, cupped, rounded, reddish magenta petals and numerous hot pink stamens tipped with yellow. The flowers attract nectar-feeding birds. When in bloom, the larger trees will be surrounded by a colorful carpet of fallen stamens. The tree is worth planting for the floral display alone.
The flowers are followed by pear-shaped, dimple-bottomed fruits up to 4" long, that may be any color from white to pink to red upon ripening. The flesh inside is white, crisp and extremely juicy with a mild sweet flavor. Flowering generally occurs in early summer and fruits ripen about 2-3 months later.
The Malay apple is strictly tropical, too tender for most of Florida except extreme South Florida from Miami southward. It is intolerant of any frost whatsoever. The tree needs a humid climate, preferably with all-year-round rainfall. Full sun and well-drained soil are required as well. Trees will tolerate partial shade.
