The genuine cacao or chocolate tree is a small and handsome evergreen tree, growing in South America and the West Indies, from 12-25' high, and branching at the top. The bark is thin, somewhat smooth, and brownish. The football-shaped seed pods sprout directly from the trunks and branches. The seeds are numerous, compressed, 1 inch long, reddish-brown externally, dark-brown internally, and imbedded in a whitish, sweetish, buttery pulp.
The natural habitat of the cocoa tree is in the lower storey of the evergreen rainforest, and climatic factors, particularly temperature and rainfall, are important in encouraging optimum growth. Chocolate is intolerant of even the slightest frost or dry winter weather and for that reason it is not recommended for outdoor planting, even in South Florida. It is best grown in a heated, climate-controlled greenhouse. It prefers partial shade and rich, deep, moist but well-drained soil.
