Blueberry forms an upright deciduous shrub 4-6' tall with a slightly smaller spread. The branches turn red in cold weather. Leaves are handsome and glossy and turn bright reddish orange before dropping. The small urn-shaped flowers are white or pale pink and bloom in early spring; these ripen into sweet, juicy, bluish-black berries up to 1" in diameter. Blueberries are known to have many health benefits and are highly nutritious, and can be used for jellies, jams, baked goods, sorbets, beverages, or eaten raw.
Blueberry needs an acidic soil with a pH in the range of 4.8 to 5.2. Fruiting is best when the plants are positioned in full sun, but it also does just fine in partial shade. It needs a well drained soil, but with frequent watering for best results. Acidic, organic-based soils are best. The shrubs may need nets to prevent ripening berries from being eaten by birds.
